Knox-Lincoln SWCD 2010 Conservation Fair
Thursday, September 30, 9:00am - 1:30pm at the Union Fairgrounds
What is the Conservation Fair?
This fair, now in its tenth year, introduces students to ideas and concepts
about agriculture and the environment and living sustainably. Over
40 exhibitors offer demonstrations and hands-on activities on topics like
aquaculture, healthy foods, electric cars, beekeeping, and raising
alpacas. There also is a main presenter offering large groups entertaining
information about our world through music and/or drama. We want students
to see that learning about agriculture and environmental science is interesting
and fun!
Who can attend the Conservation Fair?
This fall the fair is for students in grades 1 and 2 who live in Knox and
Lincoln Counties. If some classes have combined grades that include K and
3rd
graders, these students are welcomed, too.
What is the cost? Thanks to donors and
many of our exhibitors, who donate their time and talents, this fair is free of
cost to schools and students. You only have to get to the fairgrounds.
How can you see all those exhibitors? Well,
you really can’t. With over 400 students coming, we want to ensure that
there is something for everyone. When you arrive, you receive a map
and list of exhibitors. Your group goes wherever it wants to go depending
on interest and what you want to learn about. If one exhibit is too crowded, you
go to the next one and can return later.
What can teachers take back to the classroom?
Each exhibitor will submit a list of 3-4 literacy terms that relate to the
exhibit. Students will be able to learn about each of these terms,
building their vocabulary and increasing their awareness of agriculture and
environmental science. Back in the classroom, teachers can integrate these
literacy terms into the curricula. Literacy terms and
definitions will be available on the District’s website in late August, along
with a list of exhibitors.
What else is available for teachers who want to
enhance learning in agriculture and environmental science and sustainable
living? If you are interested in developing a project with your group
that integrates scientific problem solving, inquiry, communications or
economics, contact the District office. We will help groups identify
projects where research skills can be used. We will work with you directly
or connect you with resources to support your work. We also hope
that teachers will reach out to the exhibitors and invite them to their school
for more learning opportunities. Some of these groups charge fees to
recoup their costs for materials, travel and/or time, but are well worth the
money.
So what’s the catch? Nothing is ever free these
days. The Knox-Lincoln Soil & Water Conservation District is
fulfilling its mission by providing these opportunities for you. We
do ask that you complete an evaluation form and do some pre/post assessment with
your students so we can improve future programming and let our donors know their
financial support helped. We are committed to expand students’
understanding of the need for ongoing conservation measures that will ensure
clean air and water and sound renewable and sustainable agricultural and
environmental practices for the health of our planet.
